FERRUM, Va. – The 19th-ranked Ferrum College men's basketball team thrashed Shenandoah University by a score of 95-70 on Saturday evening inside Swartz Gym.
The Panther's super-charged offense routed the Hornets in the first stanza, outscoring the visitors 57-30. The USA South victory brings Ferrum to a 9-1 record in conference play, tied with North Carolina Wesleyan College for the conference regular season title.
The hosts torched the nets in the opening half of action, shooting an eye-popping 20 of 28 (71.4%) from the field, which is a season-high.
Derek Mitchell had an impressive night, exploding for 23 points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds. He connected on 7 of 8 from the field and 9 of 13 from the free-throw line.
Keith Crump chalked up 13 points, shooting a solid 6 of 9 from the field, dishing out a game-high 9 assists in the process. Marcus Mayo added 12 points to the total and Lamont king tallied 11 to round out double-figure scoring for the Black and Gold.
Mitch Dudley of Shenandoah (3-18, 1-8 USA South) tossed in 13 points on the night. Brandon Bryan had 12 points, going 6-6 from the free-throw line. Avery Green also had an effective showing, scoring 12 points and going 5-8 from the field.
Ferrum (20-3, 9-1 USA South) will take on conference rival Christopher Newport University tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 13. The Panthers will look for revenge as the Captains are the only team to deal Coach Bill Tharp's troops a loss in conference action.
