BURLINGTON, N.C. — Scott Obenshain carded an opening-round three-under-par 68 to grab the first round lead and fuel Ferrum College to a 303, good for fourth place. Obenshain, recently honored on the USA South Men's Golf All-Conference team as a honorable mention, takes a two-shot lead into tomorrow's second round.
Fellow freshman Jacob Hardy carded a 77, including a chip-in for birdie on the 17th hole. Brian Bowles was one stroke behind, finishing with a 78. Brian Cox and Brad Tribble rounded out scoring for the Panthers with an 80 and 84, respectively.
Ferrum's 303 eclipsed its season best by six strokes on the par-71, 7,032-yard layout. The Panthers carded back-to-back 309's at the Tom Kinder Memorial hosted by Bridgewater College last fall.
No. 3 Methodist University, No. 4 Greensboro College and No. 27 Christopher Newport University are in a three-way tie for first place in the team standings after opening with team ledgers of 289, 14 strokes ahead of the Black and Gold.
Coach Adam Crawford's club will be back in action tomorrow morning in the last wave of tee times playing with the Monarchs, the Pride and the Captains.
