FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. --
Tim Reynolds was 10-16 passing for 122 yards, and rushed for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns as Ferrum College beat USA South Athletic Conference rival Methodist University 21-13 this afternoon at Monarch Stadium.
Tyler Brubaker got the Panthers on board, courtesy of a five-yard touchdown run at 5:48 of the first quarter. The score was set up by
Kenny Tapscott's 37-yard interception return that gave the Panthers first and 10 at the Monarchs' 38 yard line. Cody Ausherman drilled a pair of second-quarter field goals from 37 and 32 yards out to trim the lead to 7-6 heading into halftime.
Reynolds scored from a yard out at 10:09 of the third quarter to increase Ferrum's lead to 14-6. Methodist's Gerry Gillis then hauled on a Max Reber 64-yard TD pass at 8:36 of the third and lead was cut to 21-13. Reynolds scored again in the fourth quarter, capping a nine-play, 68-yard drive that put the Panthers on top 21-13 with 7:07 left to play.
Methodist had one last shot to tie the game when it drove to the Ferrum 22 yard line and faced first and 10. The next four plays netted just eight yards, forcing the Monarchs to turn the ball over on downs and watch as Ferrum ran out the clock.
Marcco McNeal and
Lynwood Pickett had nine tackles each to lead the Ferrum defense. Pickett had a pair of sacks, as did
Chris Freycinet.
Tevin Harden and
Jatavious Adams had eight tackles each. Methodist got 10 tackles from Bryan Bing, who also forced a fumble.
The win keeps Ferrum in a three-way tie for first place in the league standings with LaGrange College and Christopher Newport University. Coach Dave Harper's team will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 27, at Greensboro College. The USA South matchup begins at 1 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
