FERRUM, Va. -- Four players scored in double figures as the Ferrum College women's basketball team won its USA South Athletic Conference opener 81-51 over William Peace University tonight at Swartz Gym.
Katy Kipps led all scorers with 15 points and had six rebounds for the Panthers.
Tesla Akers had 13 points, and
Kayla Goins had 12 points, six assists and four steals.
Kylene Culler had 11 points, and
Kelsey Frazier posted another solid night with eight points, eight rebounds and six steals.
The Panthers led by seven at halftime, but blew the game open with a 44-19 second-half surge. Coach
Bryan Harvey's team sprinted to a 56-32 lead with a 19-0 run to open the second half. Akers got things started with a three-pointer and a layup, then Goins dropped a pair of treys. Culler's trey at 13:51 put Ferrum out in front 56-32.
Katisha Hyman broke the dry spell for William Peace with a jumper at 13:19 to trim Ferrum's lead to 56-34. The Panthers responded with a 13-0 run, including seven points by Kipps and four by Frazier.
Hyman had 12 points to lead the Pacers (2-2, 0-1 USA South), and Krystal Williams added 10 points in the loss. Ferrum (3-0, 1-0 USA South) returns to action Friday, Nov. 30, at home against Lynchburg College. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Swartz Gym.
