CLERMONT, Fla. -- Ferrum College's softball team opened the season with a pair of non-conference wins at the 2012 NTC Spring Games in Florida during the Panthers' spring break trip.

Rachel Shumaker earned both wins, pitching five innings of relief in the two games.  Against Alma, Shumaker allowed no hits, runs or walks over the final three innings, and struck out five.  She pitched the last two innings against Adrian with two hits and an unearned run.

Karly Thompson went 3-3 with a double, three RBI and a run against Alma.  Thompson also went 3-3 against Adrian with a double and a stolen base.  Hannah Shumaker went 3-4 with a solo homer in the first inning.  She later belted an RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning, then scored the eventual game-winning run off Brittany Barlow's double.  Hannah Shumaker started the game on the mound, scattering five hits over six innings with one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts.

Ferrum (2-0) returns to action Monday, Feb. 27, against Capital University and Augustana (IL) College.  The games start at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
