FERRUM, Va. -- Christopher Newport University outscored Ferrum College 47-32 in the second half to earn an 85-78 win and stay undefeated in USA South Athletic Conference men's basketball action this afternoon at Swartz Gym.
Ferrum led by nine points twice in the first half, the last time on a three-pointer by
Alton Whitby with 1:43 left in the half to give Ferrum a 44-35 lead.
Conley Taylor scored 23 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to lead the Captains (18-4, 9-0 USA South) to the win. Tra Benefield added 19 points and Nik Biberaj had 13 points.
Marcus Mayo (Rockbridge County) had 19 points and eight assists for Ferrum.
Lamont King had 18 points,
Daryl Hart had 13 points and
Nick English (Blacksburg) added 10 points in the loss.
Ferrum (13-9, 6-4 USA South) returns to action Saturday, Feb. 11 at home against Methodist University. The USA South doubleheader gets underway at 2 p.m. with the women's game, to be followed at 4 p.m. by the men's game.
