SALEM, Va. -- The Ferrum College softball team won three of four games at the 2012 Roanoke Valley Softball Bash, played Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11, at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.
The Panthers opened the weekend with a pair of shutout wins Saturday over Randolph-Macon College and Hunter College, 4-0 and 9-0, respectively. On Sunday, Coach Vickie Van Kleeck's team beat Huntingdon College 9-1 before losing to Eastern Mennonite University 2-1.
Karly Thompson went 4-5 in two games Saturday with a home run, a double, three RBI and a pair of runs. Against Hunter,
Suzanne Plasters had a solo homer in the third inning, Thompson had a solo shot in the fourth, and
Kylene Culler had a two-run blast in the sixth.
Kaitlyn Culler earned the win against Hunter, racking up eight strikeouts over five innings. Culler also earned the win over Huntingdon Sunday, pitching a complete 6-inning game with five strikeouts.
Hannah Shumaker went 2-4 against Huntingdon with two home runs, three RBI and a pair of runs. Shumaker had a solo homer in the third inning, and a two-run blast in the sixth.
Chloe Brzycki went 3-4 with a run.
Shumaker then pitched a complete game in the loss to Eastern Mennonite, allowing four hits and an earned run over seven innings, walking three and striking out 13.
Rachel Shumaker went 2-3 with a run scored.
Ferrum (14-2) returns to action Wednesday, March 14, at home against Averett University. The USA South doubleheader will be Ferrum's league-opener and gets underway at 5 p.m. at Franklin Community Bank Field.
