FERRUM, Va. -- The Ferrum College women's soccer team won its 2012 USA South opener with a 2-1 win over Piedmont College this morning at Penn-Roediger Field.
Casey Johnson scored Ferrum's first goal unassisted at 24:56, then assisted on
Morgan Funck's goal at 27:34. The Panthers held the 2-0 lead until Laura Goodwin tallied an unassisted goal in the 68th minute to avoid the shutout.
Caitlyn Deaton had a career-high 14 saves for Ferrum. Marjorie Hammond and Michaela Hammond combined for four saves for Piedmont (4-2). Deaton's previous career-high was 12 saves twice during the 2011 season.
Ferrum (2-3) returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 19, at home against Salem College. The non-conference match gets underway at 7 p.m. at Penn-Roediger Field, and will be streamed on Ferrum's athletics web site ferrumpanthers.com.
