NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University led 7-0 at halftime en route to a 9-1 USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer win over Ferrum College this afternoon at CNU. Emma O'Reilly and Dani Gunderson had two goals each for Christopher Newport (3-7, 1-2 USA South), while Karly Utterback had a goal and three assists.
Kara Pegram helped Ferrum avoid the shutout by scoring a goal in the 65th minute of play.
Morgan Funck was credited with an assist on the goal.
Caitlyn Deaton played the first half in net for Ferrum, allowing seven goals and making eight saves.
Chelsea Wingate played the second half, allowing two goals with no saves. Meghan Gumbs and Emily Brown split time evenly in net for CNU to earn the shared shutout.
Ferrum (3-5, 2-1 USA South) returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 26, at home against Southern Virginia University. The non-conference matchup with the Knights gets underway at 7 p.m. at Penn-Roediger Field.
