DANVILLE, Va. -- Quarterback
Tim Reynolds had 81 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Ferrum College cruised to a 49-28 USA South Athletic Conference football win this afternoon at Averett University. The game was the league-opener for both teams.
Reynolds scored once in each quarter, beginning with a 24-yard scamper at 8:42 of the first quarter. Averett tied the game at 7-7 on Wynston Stephen's 21-yard reception from Martin Smith at 5:46 of the first. Reynolds opened the second quarter with a 3-yard run at 8:25, then found
Tyler Brubaker for a 37-yard scoring strike with 18 second left in the first half for a 21-7 Ferrum halftime lead.
Derrick West scored next for Ferrum, hailing in a 6-yard pass from Brubaker at 9:42 of the third quarter, then Reynolds scored a pair of rushing TDs (1-yard, 13-yard) at 6:38 of the third quarter and 14:52 of the fourth.
Marty Haley plowed in from nine yards out for the Panthers, and the Panthers held a commanding 49-7 lead. The Cougars scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter but it wasn't enough as Ferrum held on for the 49-28 win.
Reynolds closed out the game with five touchdowns total, four rushing and one passing. He was 11-15 passing for 186 yards with no interceptions and was sacked once. Smith was 12-24 passing for 126 yards and three touchdowns for Averett (0-4, 0-1 USA South), with two interceptions and two sacks. Backup QB Brian Finney was 4-4 passing for 79 yards, with no interceptions or sacks. Ke'Von White rushed 16 times for 94 yards for Averett.
Lynwood Pickett and
Ryan Jordan each had six tackles to lead the Ferrum defense. Jordan also had a fumble recovery.
Kenny Tapscott and
Tevin Harden each had an interception for Ferrum. Nico Patterson and P.J. Thomas led Averett's defense with 10 and nine tackles, respectively, and Terry Smith added seven tackles.
Ferrum (3-1, 1-0 USA South) plays next on Saturday, Oct. 6, at Christopher Newport University. The USA South game gets underway at 7 p.m. at Pomoco Stadium in Newport News, Virginia.
