FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Ferrum College men's basketball, the #2 seed in this week's USA South Tournament, edged #7 Maryville College 73-71 tonight in the quarterfinals. Brian Clark nailed a jumper with :01 left in regulation to advance the Panthers into Friday's semifinal round. The tournament is being held Thursday through Saturday at Crown Center Arena.
Maryville led 19-12 at the 10:21 mark of the first half, but Ferrum used a 23-11 run, including a
Josh Bruce three-pointer at 1:45, to go up 35-31 at the break. Wes Lambert drilled a three-pointer at 17:23, and the Scots held the lead again 40-39.
The Panthers stayed close and eventually tied the game at 63-63 with 5:35 showing on the clock after
J.D. Wallace knocked down a pair of free throws. There were three more ties before Maryville took a 71-69 lead with 1:03 left when Craig Raye connected on one of two free throws.
Jamal Pullen made a pair of free throws with 50 seconds left to tie the game 71-71. Spencer Peake then missed a pair of free throws for Maryville and Clark controlled the rebound off the second miss. Clarke then hit the game-winning basket with one tick left on the clock.
Pullen led all scorers with 25 points on 5-9 shooting from the floor, and was 15-16 from the line.
J.D. Wallace had 13 points, while
Marshall Hamilton had nine and Clarke had eight. Christian Ford had 16 points for the Scots (10-14), Lambert had 11 and Joey Bodewig had 10.
Ferrum (14-10) will face the winner of tonight's quarterfinal matchup between #3 Greensboro College and #6 LaGrange College. That semifinal will be played Friday at 9:00 p.m.
