DANVILLE, Va. -- Ferrum College earned a pair of USA South Athletic Conference softball wins this afternoon over league rival Averett University, 5-2 and 2-1, at Cougar Field. The wins gave the Panthers a share of the 2013 USA South regular season title.
Ferrum and Piedmont College both finished 19-3 in league play this season to share the league crown. The Panthers earned the top seed in this week's USA South Tournament by virtue of a pair of wins over Piedmont last weekend in Ferrum. The Lions will be the tournament's #2 seed, with Christopher Newport University the #3 seed.
Kaitlyn Culler improved to 14-2 this season with a complete seven-inning six-hitter in the opener. Culler allowed two earned runs and two walks, while striking out two.
Suzanne Plasters went 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI.
Courtney Burner went 2-3 with a double and two RBI.
Emily Taylor (9-4) tossed a complete seven-inning, seven-hitter to earn the win in the nightcap. She allowed an earned run and a walk, with two strikeouts.
Alicia Eichenlaub went 2-2 with a double and an RBI.
Lindsey Slover went 2-3 with a stolen base for the Panthers (30-8, 19-3 USA South).
