
FERRUM, Va. -- Averett University used timely hitting and two Ferrum College errors to score three runs in the top of the seventh inning to take game three of the USA South baseball series 5-3 tonight at Panther Field.
Averett's Kevin Alvarez and Jason Carter both singled in the seventh inning, and Andrew Davies later reached on an error to plate Alvarez. Carter would then score on a groundout by Joshua Hatcher. Hunter Ashworth followed with a single to drive in the third and game-winning run for the Cougars (10-15, 5-10 USA South).
Ferrum scored a run in the bottom of the frame when
Eddie McGrath singled to drive in
Clay Massie. The Panthers would plate another run in the ninth on
Lane Deaver's first career home run, a solo blast over the right field fence.
Cody Moore got the win for Averett, pitching seven strong innings with nine strikeouts. Ashworth went 3-5 at the plate for the Cougars. Starter
Javin Metz absorbed the loss after pitching 6.2 innings and allowing three runs and a walk. Deaver and
Adam Duncan each had a pair of base hits for the Panthers.
Ferrum (17-9, 14-4 USA South) returns to action this Wednesday, April 2, against Roanoke College. The non-conference gam is set for 7 p.m. at Panther Field.
