Softball Goes 1-1 in First Day at USA South Tournament

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Ferrum College's softball team went 1-1 in first day action at the 2016 USA South Tournament, being held this weekend at Rocky Mount Sports Complex. The #5 seed Panthers fell 3-2 to #2 seed Averett University, then won 7-5 over #8 seed William Peace University.

Mary Beth Smith's 3-run homer in the third inning was enough for the Cougars. Smith also pitched all seven innings, striking out six and allowing just two base hits. Courtney Rudd pitched all six innings for the Panthers with eight strikeouts.

Amanda Roberts improved to 9-7 with the win, pitching 5.1 innings with four hits and two strikeouts. Rudd came on to pitche the final 1.2 innings, fanning three batters to pick up her first save this season.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will return to Rocky Mount Sports Complex Saturday, April 16, for a 10:00 a.m. game with #3 seed North Carolina Wesleyan College.
