FERRUM, Vs. -- Ferrum College split the first two of three USA South Athletic Conference baseball games with Averett University tonight at home, winning the opener 17-5 and dropping the nightcap 10-5 at Panther Field.

THE BASICS
In the opener, Averett jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, only to have the Panthers plate four runs in the bottom of the frame, then add two more in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings to take control of the game.
Garrett Dorton was a combined 6-9 with a double, two runs and five RBI in today's games. Starter
Jacob Holland (1-0) pitched seven innings to get the win in the opener, allowing 12 hits, five earned runs and two walks with seven strikeouts. Kyle Vidano had a three-run homer in the second game for the Cougars, while starter Matt Tuggle (1-3) earned the win after pitching five innings and allowing six hits, two earned runs and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts.
