SALEM, Virginia -- Ferrum College's softball team split two games in day one action at the Mountain Mash Tournament, hosted by Roanoke College at the James Moyer Sports Complex.

The Panthers opened with a 3-2 loss to Adrian College in eight innings, then came back to post an 8-3 win over the host Maroons. Roanoke beat Adrian 3-2 earlier in th day.

THE BASICS
In the opener, Katie Connolly scored the game-winning run for Adrian on Infinity Rogers' RBI fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning. 

Keri Hamlett went 2-4 with a run and a stolen base for Ferrum, while Tori Scott went 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base in the loss. Erin Nelson (L, 0-2) absorbed the loss, pitching all 7.1 innings with 10 hits and six strikeouts.

In the nightcap win over Roanoke, Skyla Strohm's RBI double to center field in the third inning drove in Bayley Cunningham for the eventual game-winning run. Cunningham went 2-3 with a run against the Maroons, and was a combined 3-4 with two runs today.

Skyler Swaney went 2-3 with a run and two RBI, and Breanna Weaver went 2-2 with a run and an RBI. Swaney (W, 1-1) pitched a two-hit, seven-inning complete game with a pair of strikeouts to earn her first career win.

Coach Gerald Culler's team will return to Salem Saturday, March 6, for day two action at the Mountain Mash Tournament. Roanoke and Adrian open the day with an 11:00 a.m. game, followed by Ferrum-Adrian at 1:00 p.m. and Ferrum-Roanoke at 3:00 p.m.
