FERRUM, Va. -- Drew Ward's grand slam in the top of the fifth inning sealed the win for Guilford College as the Quakers beat Ferrum College 11-5 in non-conference baseball action this afternoon in Ferrum.
The Quakers plated three runs in the third inning, including Kyle Wooden's two-run homer. Ferrum answered in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to cut the lead, only to see Ward clear the bases with a towering blast over the left field fence for a 7-2 Guilford lead.
Guilford scored another run in the sixth inning, before FC's
Kevin Marshall hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to cut the lead to 8-4. A run each in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings gave Guilford it's final tally. Ferrum was able to push one last run across in the bottom of the ninth, a
Jesse Fuller solo homer.
Corey Landis went the distance to earn the win for Guilford. He allowed just three hits and four earned runs in nine innings of work, walking five and striking out three.
Michael Baskeyfield absorbed the loss for Ferrum, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs over five innings. Guilford (9-3) had 18 hits to Ferrum's three.
Ferrum (6-4) returns to action Saturday, Feb. 28, at Christopher Newport University. The USA South opener gets underway at 1 p.m. Ferrum will also play at CNU Sunday, March 1, starting at 2 p.m.
