Baseball Opens with Win Over Southern Virginia

BOX SCORE

FERRUM, Va. -- Outfielder Travis Crump doubled in the bottom of the ninth inning to drive in the winning run as Ferrum College defeated non-conference opponent Southern Virginia University 10-9 to open the 2009 baseball season this afternoon at home.

The Panthers surrendered a 9-4 lead in the top of the ninth when outfielder Jake Johnson belted a two-run homer over the right field fence, then catcher Grant Woods hit a towering three-run shot over the left field fence to tie the game at 9-9.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth, pinch hitter Jason Parker walked, advanced to second on a balk by SVU pitcher T.J. Whiting, then scored on Crump's RBI double to left center.

Josh Taylor pitched two thirds of an inning in the ninth to get the win for Ferrum, striking out one of the two batters he faced.  Whiting absorbed the loss for the Knights.  Starter Brian Mays went four innings, allowing three hits and striking out six.

Michael Nolte went 3-5 with two doubles, two RBI and a run.  Crump went 2-6 with two doubles and four RBI.  Outfielder Tyler Brubaker and second baseman Paul Jaglowski each had a pair of base hits.

Ferrum improves to 1-0 with the win, while the Knights fall to 0-1.  Coach Darren Hodges' team will be back in action Monday, Feb. 9, at King College at 3 p.m. in Bristol, Tennessee.  The Panthers return home Thursday, Feb. 12, to host Roanoke College at 3 p.m.  Both are non-conference games.
