DANVILLE, Va. --
Steven Harris had a pair of rushing touchdowns to lead Ferrum College to a 34-13 USA South Athletic Conference football victory over Averett University on the road this afternoon.
Averett got on the board first with a Brad Scott 24-yard field goal at 7:38 of the first quarter. Harris got Ferrum on the scoreboard with a 9-yard run at 9:15 of the second quarter.
Derrick West put Ferrum on top 14-3 when he hauled in a 12-yard TD pass from
Marcus Mayo with 54 second remaining in the first half.
Harris scored his second TD on a 4-yard run at the 8:05 mark in the third quarter to make the lead 21-3 Ferrum. Scott drilled the uprights from 23 yards out at 3:10 of the third to trim the lead to 21-6.
Dominique Lesine scored next for the Panthers on a 36-yard run at 1:32 of the third, then
Vince Munch hauled in a 15-yard scoring pass from Mayo at 10:22 of the fourth for a 34-6 Ferrum lead. Averett closed the game with a 61-yard scoring pass play from backup QB Kirkland Brown to Jeremy Dixon with 9:46 left to play for final score of 34-13.
Mayo was 8-18 passing with an interception for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Mayo led Ferrum in rushing with 56 yards on 18 carries. Cody Ladutko was 13-29 passing for 163 yards. Brown threw for 152 yards on 9-17 passing with one TD. Dixon had nine receptions for 182 yards and a score for Averett (5-4, 3-3 USA South).
Willie Taylor was in on 10 tackles for Ferrum (4-5, 4-2 USA South), including three solo stops, three tackles for loss and a quarterback sack.Â
Delano Hall made five solo and four assisted tackles for the Panthers, and broke up two passes.
Ferrum closes the season next Saturday, Nov. 13, at home against Maryville College. The USA South game kicks off at 1 p.m. at W.B. Adams Stadium. Prior to the game, the College will honor its graduating players with a Senior Day ceremony. The College will also honor
Dave Davis, who will retire at the end of the season after 17 years as Ferrum's head football coach.
