BURLINGTON, N.C. -- #5 Ferrum College dropped its USA South Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament opener this morning to #4 Christopher Newport University 10-8 at Burlington Athletic Stadium.

Christopher Newport (19-12) built a 9-1 lead after seven innings, only to see Ferrum storm back and score six runs in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 9-7.  The Captains scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 10-7 lead, which Ferrum matched in the ninth for the final 10-8 score.

Justin Franklin, Jason Butterworth, Caleb Dorton and DJ Phillips each had two base hits for Ferrum (18-12).  Both teams had 12 base hits, but Ferrum committed three errors to the Captains' one.

Brian Mays was credited with the loss, pitching seven innings.  He allowed 10 hits and five earned runs.

Connor Madden hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning for the Captains.  Josh Brinkman pitched seven innings to get the win, striking out eight.

With the loss, Ferrum now plays #1 seed North Carolina Wesleyan College tonight at 8 p.m. in an elimination game for the Panthers.
