FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Ferrum College topped the University of Mary Washington 7-3 on the road this afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
Ferrum trailed 2-0 after four innings, but scored two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to forge ahead 6-3 after six full frames.
Jason Parker doubled down the left field line in the top of the sixth to drive in two runs, including the eventual game-winner. Parker went 2-4 this afternoon with a double, two runs and two RB.
Justin Franklin went 3-5 with a double, two RBI and run, while
Daniel Alvarez went 2-4 with a double and a run.
Peter Byron also had a pair of base hits, going 2-3 with a run and an RBI, and was hit by a pitch.
Starter
Jon Wilson improved to 4-1 this season, pitching seven innings. Wilson allowed seven hits three runs (one earned), walked one and struck out two.
Michael Baskeyfield was credited with the save, pitching the final two innings and allowing no runs or hits.
Mary Washington (26-11) got a pair of base hits each from Will Wright and Nick Espinosa. Ryan Engelking absorbed the loss, pitching the first five innings. He allowed five hits and four earned runs, walked four and struck out three.
The win was Ferrum's second this season over an NCAA-bound team. Mary Washington earned a trip to this year's Div. III playoffs by virtue of winning the 2010 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament and the league's AQ into the NCAAs. Ferrum's other win over a playoff-bound team was over Bridgewater College by a score of 14-3 March 25 on the road. Bridgewater won the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament to qualify for the NCAA playoffs.
Ferrum (23-13) will play at York College of Pennsylvania Thursday and Friday, May 6-7. The non-conference games are set to begin at 3:30 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
