LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Fresh off four straight wins, the Ferrum College baseball team ran into a smoking hot set of Lynchburg College bats, falling 19-5 this afternoon on the road. The Hornets pounded out 23 base hits en route to the non-conference win.
Lynchburg opened a 6-0 lead after two innings. The Panthers battled back with three runs in the fourth inning to trim the lead to 6-3.
Wes Walker opened the inning with a walk, and
Paul Jaglowski singled to left field.
Eddie McGrath reached on a fielder choice, moving Jaglowski to second.
Casey Naff then drilled a single down the left field line to score Jaglowski and advance McGrath to second.
Peter Byron then doubled down the right field line to score McGrath and move Naff to third.
Jason Parker flied out for the second out,
Taryn Hayden walked and
Josh Mahaffey was struck by a pitch to allow Naff to score from third.
Lynchburg scored five more in the bottom of the frame to extend their lead to 11-3. The Panthers pushed two more runs across the plate in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 11-5. Hayden tripled to right center and Mahaffey drove him in with a single to center field. Walker singled up the middle, followed by Jaglowski's single to score Mahaffey.
The Hornets (11-4) scored two more runs in the seventh inning and six in the eighth. Starter Brandon Miller pitched 3.2 innings for Lynchburg, while Martin Henderlite went the remaining 5.1 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win. Kenah Michael went 5-6 for LC with two doubles, a triple, four runs and three RBI.
Jaglowski went 3-5 with a run and an RBI. Mahaffey went 2-3 with two RBI and a run. Starter
Chris Madison absorbed the loss for Ferrum, pitching two innings.
Ferrum (13-6) returns to the diamond Thursday, March 15, at Guilford College. The non-conference game gets underway at 3 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina.
