DANVILLE, Va. -- Averett University picked up its second USA South baseball win in as many days over Ferrum College, winning this afternoon 3-2 in 10 innings and taking a 2-0 series lead. Jim Newcombe's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th innings drove in J.R. Wood for the game-winning run.
Averett (13-3, 6-2 USA South) led 2-0 after two innings, but Ferrum (7-9, 3-8 USA South) scored two runs in the fifth inning to tie the game. In the fifth,
Justin Cox singled up the middle to drive in
Clay Massie, and
Wes Walker drew a walk with the bases loaded to plate
Matt Reynolds.
Theo Viracola earned the win, pitching the final 1.2 innings for Averett with one hit and no runs.
Javin Metz got the loss after pitching two thirds on an inning and allowing the game-winning run in the 10th inning. Starter
Jake Perkins pitched nine ninnings with five hits, two runs (neither earned) and a walk, while striking out eight. The two teams will play the third and final game Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in Danville.
