FERRUM, Va. --
Karly Thompson had a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Ferrum College a 7-5 softball win in the nightcap, and allowing the Panthers to salvage a split with USA South Athletic Conference newcomer Huntingdon (Ala.) College this afternoon at Franklin Community Bank Field.
In the opener, the Panthers were held to seven total base hits in a game halted by the 8-run rule in the sixth inning.
Chloe Brzycki went 2-3 and scored a run.
Emily Taylor pitched all six innings, allowing seven hits, six unearned runs and five walks, with three strikeouts. Holly Ostrander had a two-run homer for the Hawks (10-7, 6-2 USA South).
In the nightcap,
Amanda Roberts went 4-4 with two doubles, a run and an RBI for the Panthers, and Thompson went 3-5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI.
Amber Coffin went 2-3 with a double and two RBI.
Ferrum (9-5, 5-3 USA South) returns to action Tuesday, March 11, at Mary Baldwin College. The USA South doubleheader gets underway at 3:00 p.m. in Staunton, Virginia.
