FERRUM, Va. -- Maryville College scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to take the final game of a three-game USA South Athletic Conference baseball series with Ferrum College, 17-14, this afternoon at Panther Field.
Ferrum held a 14-13 lead heading into the ninth inning. Maryville's Landon Talley was struck by a pitch in the top on the frame to load the bases with no outs. Zack Blonder then ripped a three-RBI double to left-center to make it 16-14, then Travis Scates' single to left drove Blonder in for the final count.
Ferrum trailed 11-3 after five and a half innings but exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the sixth. Included in that run was an RBI triple by
Jeff Swoope and a two-RBI single by
Eddie McGrath.
Taryn Hayden went 3-5 with a double, two runs and two RBI. McGrath went 3-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs, and
Adam Duncan went 3-4 with two runs and two RBI. Talley went 4-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI for the Scots (6-3, 1-2 USA South).
Ferrum (7-4, 5-1 USA South) is scheduled to host Bridgewater College Tuesday, March 4, at 4:00 p.m. and Emory & Henry College Wednesday, March 5, at 5:00 p.m. Coach
Ryan Brittle's team will then play another USA South series against LaGrange College Saturday and Sunday, March 8-9, in LaGrange, Georgia. The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 2:00 p.m., then a single game Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
