FERRUM, Va. -- In its first action at home this season, Ferrum College swept a pair of USA South Athletic Conference softball games over LaGragne College, winning 5-4 and 5-2 this afternoon at Franklin Community Bank Field. The Panthers have won eight straight games since opening the season 0-4.
In the opener, Ferrum trailed 3-2 in the sixth inning, but scored three runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-3 lead and held on for the win.
Aiyana Lew, got the win after pitching the final inning and a third.
Karly Thompson went 1-3 with a triple, scored a run and drove in another. Starter
Emily Taylor pitched the opening five and two thirds innings.
Amanda Roberts pitched a complete seven-inning game in the nightcap to earn the win for Ferrum. She allowed six hits, one earned run and a walk, and struck out two. Thompson went 2-4 with two doubles and a run, while Lew went 2-4 with a double, an RBI and a run for Ferrum.
Ferrum (8-4, 4-2 USA South) returns to action Monday, March 10, at home against Huntingdon College. The USA South doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played Saturday, March 8, but a spring snowstorm caused the games to be postponed until Monday. The opener is set to begin at 12:00 p.m.
