FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College took the rubber game of a three-game USA South Athletic Conference baseball series with Averett University, winning today's game 11-2. The Panthers split with Averett Saturday, March 3, winning the opener 17-5 and losing the nightcap 10-5.

THE BASICS
Brandon Roberts' RBI single to right field in the third inning got Ferrum on the scoreboard first. The Panthers struck for three more runs in the fourth inning, one on Scott Breedon's walk, then two on Grey Sherfey's RBI single through the left side. Ferrum tacked on two runs in the sixth inning, three in the seventh and two in the eighth for a commanding 11-0 lead. Hunter LePrell's two-RBI single to right center in the top of the ninth inning helped the Cougars to avoid the shutout. Starter Drew Calohan (1-0) pitched seven full innings to get the win, allowing three hits, no runs and two walks, with 10 strikeouts. Roberts went 3-5 with a triple, two runs and two RBI. Dallas Smithers (2-1) absorbed the loss after pitching 3.1 innings with one hit, three earned runs, four walks and four strikeouts. Smithers and Matt Tuggle each had a pair of base hits for the Cougars.

COACH'S THOUGHTS
"Great series win this weekend," said Head Coach Ryan Brittle. "Overall, we got good pitching and had some timely hits."

NEXT GAME
Brittle's squad will be back in action Monday, March 5, at home against Roanoke College. The non-conference game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, in Salem, Virginia, but has been moved to Ferrum. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m. at Panther Field.
