FERRUM, Va. -- Ferrum College split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Montclair State University today at home, taking the opener 11-1 then dropping the nightcap 10-9 at Panther Field.

THE BASICS
Ferrum got three runs in the first inning of the opener off Josh Greenway's two-run homer to left and Ozzie Torres' single to center that drove in Connor Dopp. Torres and Dopp had RBI singles in the third inning to make it a 5-0 game, then both teams scored a run each in the fourth, Ferrum's off Isaac Yeaman's solo shot to left.

Torres sent a two-run bomb over the left field fence in the fifth inning to make it 8-1. In the sixth inning, Ferrum picked up a run each on Grey Sherfey's RBI single, Torres' RBI double, a throwing error. Starter Drew Calohan got the win, pitching a complete game with six strikeouts in a planned seven inning game.

Ferrum led 3-1 after an inning in game two on an RBI single by Greenway and a two-RBI double by Kyle Anstice. The Red Hawks answered with six runs in the second and one in the third to take an 8-3 lead and never trailed from there.

Greenway scored on a wild pitch in the fifth, followed by Christian Campbell's single that drove in a pair of runs to trim the lead to 8-6 after five full innings. Michael Schweyher's RBI single down the right field line in the sixth pushed two more runs across the plate and extended the lead to 10-6.

Ferrum answered with three in the bottom of the eighth. Torres was struck by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run, Tim Ortega had a sac fly to right field to score another and Greenway had a sac fly to left to score the third and the lead was down to 10-9. That was all the scoring either team would do.

Coach Ryan Brittle's team will be back in action Saturday, February 29, and Sunday, March 1, with the final two games of a four-game series between Ferrum and Montclair State. The two teams will play a nine-inning game Saturday and another Sunday, with both games set to start at 1:00 p.m.
