EMORY, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's tennis team picked up a win over Emory & Henry College on the road April 12, winning 5-4 in non-conference action.
The Panthers dropped two of the three doubles matches to fall behind 2-1. Freshmen
Allen Robertson and
Kenny Kadar paired for an 8-5 win over Will Garrison and Brian Butler at the #2 spot.
The Wasps added to their lead with wins at #1 and #2 singles to take a 4-1 lead. Ferrum bounced back with sophomore Bob Dill's 6-1, 6-2 win over Garrison at #4 singles, and Kadar's 6-2, 6-4 win over Kelly McCall at #3 singles to cut E&H's lead to 4-3. Freshman
John Hartin then beat Butler 6-1, 7-5 at #5 singles to tie the match at 4-4.
In the final match at #6 singles, freshman
Matt Mellone dropped his first set 6-3 to Mike Rogers. Mellone regrouped and won the second set 6-1, then took third and deciding set 6-2 to give Ferrum the win.
Ferrum (3-10) returns to action at home Sunday, March 13, against North Carolina Wesleyan College. The USA South Athletic Conference match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be a doubleheader, with Ferrum's women facing North Carolina Wesleyan as well.
