DANVILLE, Va. -- The Ferrum College men's tennis team picked ups its second win of the season with this afternoon's 5-4 USA South win over Averett University on the road. The Panthers won two of three doubles matches, then took three singles matches to earn the victory.
Connor Moncure and
Taylor Napier won 8-6 over Averett's Kirill Baranov and Alexander Terentiev at #1 doubles. Danny Khuorn and
Kevin Minter had to grind out a 9-8 win at #3 doubles over Aaron Westhusing and Julius Noreila, winning the tiebreak 7-1, to give Ferrum a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Garrett Freese and
Tyler Lee picked up wins at #4 and #5 singles, respectively, with Freese winning in three sets over Samu Rasila. With the match tied 4-4,
Sam Belcher closed things out for the Panthers with a three-set win over Westhusing at #6 singles. Belcher dropped the opening set 6-2, bounced back with a 7-5 win to tie the match at a set each, then pulled out a 6-4 win in the third set to send the Panthers home with a win.
Ferrum (2-8, 2-5 USA South) is back in action Tuesday, April 1, at home against Methodist University. The USA South match gets underway at 3:30 p.m. at the Burrows-Skeens Tennis Courts.
