Sam Webb is created with starting the modern day athletic program at Ferrum College. He was the first head baseball, basketball coach as well as Athletic Director. He also taught classes in the Physical Education Department. He instilled the belief in his players that “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you the play the game.” He was honored by the dedication in the 1956 Beacon Yearbook and granted honorary alumni status for his contributions to Ferrum College. He has officiated at high school and college basketball and football games for more than 20 years. He played three years of professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. He serves his community through the Roanoke Moose Lodge and as a member of Central United Methodist Church.
