Darryl T. Hammond was a two-year starter for Ferrum's football team, and still holds Ferrum's record for receiving yards in a game (198). He transferred to the University of Virginia after earning his associate's degree at Ferrum, and was an honorable-mention All-ACC defensive back in 1987. Hammond played in the Arena Football League, and was the No. 19 indoor player of all time in the AFL. A first team Earned first team All-AFL selection in 1995, 1996 and 1999, Hammond would go on to be named to the AFL Hall of Fame in 2013. He earned AFL All-Ironman laurels in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2005.
