MVP of 1965 track team and member of football team at Ferrum. Lettered in track at Lynchburg College and earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Virginia. Coached high school track for eight years, during which time his teams compiled a 117-8 dual meet record and won three Virginia state championships. As head track and field coach at the University of Virginia from 1983 to 1985, led Cavaliers to three Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Named head men’s and women’s track and field coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1985. Selected as ACC Coach of the Year 14 times. During his tenure, Tarheel track and field teams won 18 ACC titles. In 18 years as a collegiate coach, his athletes have won more than 180 All-American awards. Named 1995 National Collegiate Coach of the Year for men’s indoor track and field.Â
