Played football at Ferrum 1968-69 … starting cornerback on Ferrum’s 1968 national championship team … went on to play two years at Emory & Henry, where he started every game and was named Small College All-State two times … later returned to Ferrum in 1974 to serve as assistant football coach under Hank Norton … helped the Panthers win their third NJCAA national championship … one of the only Ferrum players ever to both play on and coach a national championship team … assisted with the design and production of Ferrum’s 1968 national championship ring … researched and contacted many surviving members of Ferrum’s Marshall-8, inviting them to the College first Alumni Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony … served as second chair of the Ferrum ASHOF Committee … helped Ferrum’s development efforts over the years, both as a proud life-long contributor and solicitor of donations … a talented golfer, has scored many Eagles and won numerous longest drive contests … member of YMCA 500-Mile Club (lap swimmer) … has earned 15 Virginia and North Carolina fishing citations … worked as a bricklayer and mortar salesman until 2002, earning many Top Salesman awards … since 2002, has worked full time Folk Artist, earning many Best in Show awards for his art sculptures … has work in the Morris Museum of Southern Art in Augusta, Georgia … Matt’s life and art published in a graduate student thesis, includes his involvement with Ferrum 1968 national championship team and the Marshall University tragedy … has sold art in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Vermont … met his wife Nancy Sink at Ferrum.
