Hall of Fame
Two-year letterman in basketball at Ferrum. Also lettered for two years at Virginia Commonwealth University. Served as assistant coach at VCU for five years, helping guide the Rams to three Sun Belt Conference championships. Joined the University of Alabama coaching staff in 1986. During seven years as assistant coach, the Crimson Tide racked up six NCAA tournament appearances and earned four Sweet 16 berths, four SEC tourney titles, and one regular-season SEC championship. Took over head coaching post at Alabama in 1993 and led the team to an NIT appearance that year. In his second season, the Tide posted 20 wins, including a victory over then number-one ranked Arkansas, and made the 1994 NCAA tournament field.
